Saint-Savin
Sheltered in the valley of the river Gartempe, the jewel of the architectural
heritage of Saint-Savin is the abbey. Its murals are listed as a UNESCO
World Heritage Site. The monastery buildings date back to the 17th
century.
Also not to be missed: the Gothic bridge.
Saint-Pierre-de-Maillé
There are beautiful walks to be had on the banks of the river Anglin
and the river Gartempe, amidst a landscape of sheer cliff faces ideal
for climbing. Overhanging the two rivers, a number of castles cling
to the cliffs. The Maison de Pays is worth a visit during the summer.
Antigny
This commune abounds in architectural treasures: the ancient Gallo-Roman
"VICUS" of Gué de Sciaux, the sculptures in the archaeological
museum, the 12th century Lantern of the Dead, the Romanesque church
with its 14th and 15th century frescoes, the château de Bois-Morand
and its 15th century paintings in the oratory. |
La Bussière
Both you and your children will love the watersports centre on the
banks of the river Gartempe. At the Botanical Gardens you can discover
over 300 aromatic and medicinal plants, an apple and pear tree conservation
orchard and a collection of fragrant ancient rose bushes.
Angles-sur-lAnglin
Angles-sur-l'Anglin, one of the most beautiful villages in France,
owes its reputation to its imposing natural location, its historical
and architectural heritage, its floral displays and its "Jours
d'Angles" embroidery, a tradition which dates back over one hundred
years.
Villemort
This small village dates back to Gallo-Roman times and offers pleasant
walks across the surrounding countryside.
Nalliers
You can admire the Saint-Hilaire church (11th century), and the château
de Nalliers which overhangs the river. |
Béthines
The village is built on the banks of the river Salleron (extremely
popular with fishermen), and is set in a valley with great tourist
appeal. Sights of interest in this welcoming village include the 12th
century church tower, and in particular a unique cross bearing the
"tools of passion" (fashioned by a member of a traditional
craft guild).
Saint-Germain
Built on the banks of the river Gartempe, the Romanesque church of
Saint-Germain (11th century) is worth a visit. There is a riding centre,
enabling you to appreciate the countryside on horseback.
